كم تدوم الليلة؟
تختلف الإجابة اختلافًا كبيرًا باختلاف موقعك على سطح الأرض. عادةً، تمتد الليلة من الغسق حتى الفجر، وهي الفترة التي يكون فيها الظلام حالكًا في الغالب بسبب غياب ضوء الشمس. تخيّل الليل كحضن دافئ من الظلام الذي يلف كوكبنا كل 24 ساعة؛ قد تكون مدته قصيرة، لا تتجاوز بضع ساعات في بعض المناطق، أو تمتد لفترات طويلة خلال فصول السنة المميزة في المناطق القطبية.
العوامل المؤثرة على طول الليل
1- الموقع الجغرافي
هل تساءلت يومًا لماذا يبدو الليل أطول في بعض الأماكن مقارنةً بغيرها؟ غالبًا ما يكمن الجواب في موقعنا الجغرافي. فكما يحدد موقع الورقة مدى تعرضها لأشعة الشمس، يؤثر موقعنا على سطح الأرض على طول الليل، تخيّل الأمر على النحو التالي: تخيّل الأرض كدولاب دوار عملاق، حيث يتجه قطباه نحو الشمس أو بعيدًا عنها تبعًا للفصل والوقت من اليوم. وكلما ابتعدت عن خط الاستواء، ازدادت هذه التأثيرات وضوحًا. على سبيل المثال، إذا كنت تعيش بالقرب من القطب الشمالي، ففي ليالي الصيف، بالكاد تغيب الشمس تحت الأفق، مما يمنحك ما يقارب 24 ساعة من ضوء النهار. وعلى العكس، في الشتاء، يكون الوضع معكوسًا؛ فقد يمتد الليل إلى 24 ساعة.

الإطلالة الثانية
يحدث تعاقب الليل والنهار نتيجة دوران الأرض حول محورها. فلو لم تكن الأرض تدور بهذه الطريقة، لكانت دورة الليل والنهار مختلفة تمامًا، أو ربما معدومة. ويعتمد اختلاف طول الليل والنهار على موقعك على سطح الأرض وفصل السنة. كما تتأثر ساعات النهار بميل محور الأرض ودورانها حول الشمس.
مدة الدوران
اليوم الشمسي، أي 24 ساعة، هو المدة التي تستغرقها الأرض للدوران حول محورها دورة كاملة بحيث تظهر الشمس في نفس المكان في السماء في اليوم التالي. إلا أن دوران الأرض حول الشمس يجعل قياس اليوم معقدًا نوعًا ما. لذا، فإن المدة الفعلية لدورة الأرض حول محورها أقصر قليلًا، إذ تبلغ حوالي 23 ساعة و56 دقيقة. وقد اكتشف علماء الفلك ذلك من خلال مراقبة الوقت الذي يستغرقه نجم ما للظهور في نفس المكان في السماء في اليوم التالي، وأطلقوا على هذه الظاهرة اسم اليوم النجمي.
أيام أطول وأيام أقصر
على الرغم من أن اليوم الشمسي يتكون من 24 ساعة، إلا أن ليس كل يوم يتضمن 12 ساعة من ضوء النهار و12 ساعة من الليل. يكون النهار أقصر في الشتاء منه في الصيف. ويعود ذلك إلى أن محور الأرض الوهمي ليس عموديًا تمامًا، بل يميل بزاوية 23.5 درجة. ومع دوران الأرض حول الشمس خلال العام، يميل النصف الشمالي منها نحو الشمس في الصيف، مما يجعل النهار أطول من الليل. وفي الشتاء، ينعكس هذا الوضع؛ إذ تميل الأرض بعيدًا عن الشمس، فيصبح الليل أطول. أما في الربيع والخريف، فلا يكون الميل باتجاه الشمس أو بعيدًا عنها، بل في مكان ما بينهما، لذا يكون الليل والنهار متقاربين في هذين الوقتين من السنة.

“They are not all alike. Among the People of the Scripture are a community standing firm, reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night while they prostrate in prayer.” [Al Imran: 113]
The People of the Scripture are not all the same: among them is a group who are steadfast in obeying Allah’s commands and believe in His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). They stand in prayer at night, reciting the verses of the Holy Quran, and are devoted to supplicating to Allah in their prayers.

How long does a night last?
The answer varies greatly depending on your location on Earth. Generally, a night extends from dusk until dawn, a period of intense darkness due to the absence of sunlight. Imagine night as a warm embrace of darkness that envelops our planet every 24 hours; its duration may be short, lasting only a few hours in some regions, or it may extend for long periods during the distinct seasons in polar regions.
The Factors Affecting Night Length
1. The Geographic Location
Have you ever wondered why night seems longer in some places than others? The answer often lies in our geographical location. Just as the position of a leaf determines its exposure to sunlight, our location on Earth affects the length of the night. Imagine it like this: picture the Earth as a giant rotating wheel, with its poles pointing towards or away from the sun depending on the season and time of day. The further you are from the equator, the more pronounced these effects become. For example, if you live near the North Pole, on summer nights, the sun barely sets below the horizon, giving you almost 24 hours of daylight. Conversely, in winter, the situation is reversed; the night can last up to 24 hours.
On the other hand
those who live near the equator experience much less variation in night length throughout the year. It's as if these regions are located at the heart of a rotating Earth, where light and darkness change gradually rather than abruptly. Understanding how geographical location affects the length of night helps you appreciate the natural rhythms that govern our world, making each day more exciting.
2- The Effect of Latitude
Polar Regions: Imagine traveling to the farthest reaches of our planet, where the sun barely rises at certain times of the year. In polar regions, such as the North and South Poles, latitude plays a crucial role in shaping the experience of night. In these polar regions, the concept of night takes on a completely new meaning. During the summer, the phenomenon of the midnight sun may occur, where the sun appears to remain above the horizon around the clock, creating a constant light that almost defies the definition of night. Conversely, during the winter, polar regions experience what is known as the polar night, where darkness envelops everything for extended periods.
The Second Perspective
The cycle of day and night is caused by the Earth's rotation on its axis. If the Earth did not rotate in this way, the cycle of day and night would be completely different, or perhaps nonexistent. The length of day and night varies depending on your location on Earth and the season. Daylight hours are also affected by the tilt of the Earth's axis and its revolution around the Sun.
The Duration of Rotation
A solar day, or 24 hours, is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one full rotation on its axis so that the Sun appears in the same place in the sky the following day. However, the Earth's revolution around the Sun makes measuring a day somewhat complex. Therefore, the actual duration of the Earth's rotation on its axis is slightly shorter, approximately 23 hours and 56 minutes. Astronomers discovered this by observing the time it takes for a star to appear in the same place in the sky the following day, and they named this phenomenon the sidereal day.
Longer and Shorter Days
Although the solar day consists of 24 hours, not every day has 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Daylight is shorter in winter than in summer. This is because the Earth's imaginary axis is not perfectly vertical but rather tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. As the Earth revolves around the sun throughout the year, the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun in summer, resulting in longer days than nights. In winter, this is reversed; the Earth is tilted away from the sun, making the nights longer. In spring and autumn, the tilt is neither towards nor away from the sun, but somewhere in between, so day and night are of similar length during these times of year.
The witness
God Almighty defined the night with a clear definition (that it consists of periods: Night Timings), and nothing more. This two-word phrase, "the hours of the night," explains the influence of geographical location on the international map and latitude lines. It is truly miraculous that the Quranic expression is so concise and miraculous, consisting of only two words that the West would otherwise have to explain in an entire article. Glory be to Him who defined the night with all the definitions that allow us to understand the concept of night in Islam. At the end of this section, "The Concept of Night," we will, God willing, draw a mindmap of the concept of night in Islam.
